Is Home Physiotherapy Right for You?
Situations where home physiotherapy is the right choice.
Not every patient needs home physiotherapy — many do better with clinic visits where specialised equipment is accessible. These are the situations where home delivery genuinely produces better outcomes than clinic-based care.
01
Early Post-Surgical Recovery (Weeks 0–4)
After joint replacement, ACL reconstruction, spinal surgery, C-section, or other significant procedures, the first 2–4 weeks involve substantial mobility limitations. Travel to clinic during this phase can set back recovery — getting in and out of cars is painful, stairs may be inaccessible, sitting for travel is uncomfortable. Home physiotherapy allows proper early-phase rehabilitation without the recovery costs of travel. Typically transitions to clinic visits around weeks 3–6 as mobility improves. Approximately 40% of our home physiotherapy patients are in this category.
02
Post-Stroke and Neurological Patients
Patients recovering from stroke, managing Parkinson's, MS, or other neurological conditions often have significant mobility limitations. The first 6 months post-stroke is when most recovery happens and intensive rehabilitation matters most — but it is also when patients are least able to travel. Advanced Parkinson's with freezing and fall risk, MS during relapses, end-stage progressive conditions all benefit from home delivery. Many neurological patients require home physiotherapy for months or years.
03
Elderly Patients with Mobility Limitations
Elderly patients — particularly expat parents brought to Dubai for family care — often have multiple factors making clinic visits difficult: mobility limitations, transportation challenges, fatigue from travel, anxiety in unfamiliar environments. Home physiotherapy in the familiar home setting often produces better engagement and outcomes. Falls prevention work is also more effective when performed in the actual home environment where fall risks need to be identified.
04
Postnatal Mothers in Early Recovery (Weeks 0–6)
Postnatal mothers in the first 6 weeks postpartum face significant practical barriers to clinic visits — newborn care, breastfeeding schedules, C-section recovery, pelvic floor concerns. Home physiotherapy for postnatal patients allows pelvic floor rehabilitation, diastasis recti work, and recovery support without requiring the mother to navigate clinic visits with a newborn. Particularly valuable in the first 4–6 weeks postpartum.
05
Patients with Severe Acute Pain or Acute Injury
Patients with acute severe back pain, recent significant injury, or other conditions where clinic travel is genuinely painful or impractical benefit from home physiotherapy until acute symptoms improve enough to enable clinic visits. Sometimes 2–4 home visits enable patients to transition to clinic care.
06
Long-Term Conditions Requiring Ongoing Home Support
Some patients have long-term conditions that genuinely require ongoing home physiotherapy rather than periodic clinic visits — late-stage progressive neurological conditions, palliative care patients, patients with significant permanent disabilities, patients with chronic conditions where home environment is integral to care. We support long-term home physiotherapy relationships for these patients.
If your situation does not clearly fit one of these categories, contact us for a discussion. Some patients benefit from a brief assessment to determine whether home physiotherapy is appropriate, or whether a combination of home and clinic care suits their needs.
What happens during a home physiotherapy session.
Many patients have not received home physiotherapy before and want to understand what to expect before booking. The session structure mirrors clinic-based physiotherapy in clinical content, with practical adaptations for the home environment.
Before the session
Booking confirmation includes the physiotherapist's name, arrival time window (typically 30-minute window), and your contact details for any traffic-related updates. You receive guidance on session preparation: a clear space for the assessment and exercises (approximately 2×2 metres minimum), comfortable clothes for movement, any equipment you have (yoga mat, exercise band, walker, etc.), water, and any medical documents or imaging relevant to your condition.
On arrival (5–10 minutes)
The physiotherapist arrives with portable equipment in carry bags — assessment tools, treatment supplies, exercise equipment appropriate to your condition. Brief introduction, identification confirmation if first visit, and quick assessment of the home environment to identify the most suitable space for the session.
Initial assessment (for first visit, 30–45 minutes)
Detailed history-taking, comprehensive physical examination, review of any imaging or medical reports, and discussion of your goals. The home environment often reveals factors not visible in clinic assessments — your actual postural habits at home, your sleeping arrangement, your work-from-home setup, fall risks in your home, family dynamics that affect rehabilitation engagement. This contextual information improves treatment planning.
Active treatment (typically 45–60 minutes for treatment sessions)
Hands-on manual therapy, exercise prescription appropriate to your condition, modalities where applicable (we bring portable equipment including portable ultrasound for select cases), functional re-education in your actual environment, and family education when appropriate. The home environment allows treatment to address real-life functional patterns — practising stairs in your actual stairs, walking in your actual hallways, transferring from your actual bed, exercising with the equipment you actually have at home.
Documentation and planning (10–15 minutes)
Discussion of findings, treatment plan, home exercise prescription documented in writing or via WhatsApp message with video links if needed, scheduling for follow-up sessions, and any coordination with other healthcare providers. Family members are often included in these discussions to ensure home programme compliance.
Total session time
Typical home session is 60–75 minutes from arrival to departure, including the time-cost of being a home visit. Some sessions are slightly shorter (for follow-up visits with established patients) or longer (for initial assessments or complex cases). The session time is included in your fee — no additional time-billing.
Home physiotherapy is not diluted clinic physiotherapy. For many patients, treating in the actual environment where they need to function produces better outcomes than treating in a sterile clinical setting that does not resemble their real life.

Real home physiotherapy outcomes.
"Hip replacement at 68 in London. Returned to Dubai four weeks post-surgery. Vedara's team came to our apartment in Dubai Marina from the JVC clinic — same therapist for the whole programme. Started with home visits when stairs were impossible, transitioned to clinic at week six. Walking normally by month three. Cannot recommend enough."

"My mother had a stroke at 71 while staying with us. Vedara's team started home physiotherapy within 72 hours of hospital discharge. Eight months of structured rehabilitation, mostly at our home in Dubai Hills. She walks independently now, returned to her home in Pakistan able to manage independently. The team coordinated with her neurologist in Karachi throughout."

Pelvic floor recovery, diastasis recti work, scar mobilisation. Female therapist, made the whole experience comfortable. Transitioned to clinic at six weeks postpartum."

Many home physiotherapy patients eventually transition to clinic visits as their mobility improves. The transition is not abrupt — it is gradual and based on what is genuinely best for your recovery.
Why patients transition to clinic visits
- Access to specialised equipment that does not travel — gait training equipment, gym-based strengthening, balance assessment systems, parallel bars
- Access to broader treatment options that benefit from clinic setting — combined modalities, longer functional training sessions
- Reduced cost — clinic sessions cost less than home visits; the home premium reflects real travel time costs
