THE QUICK ANSWER

Abhyanga in Dubai, in one paragraph.

Abhyanga (अभ्यङ्ग) is the classical full-body Ayurvedic oil massage — a 60 to 90-minute therapy in which warm dosha-specific medicated oils are applied head-to-toe in synchronized strokes by two trained therapists. At Vedara Care Polyclinic in Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai, Abhyanga is doctor-prescribed by BAMS-qualified physicians after dosha assessment, performed on traditional wooden droni tables, and used both as a standalone weekly therapy and as the foundation of Panchakarma protocols. Sessions start from AED 450.

THE CLASSICAL THERAPY

A 2,000-year-old daily medicine, performed in Dubai exactly as the classical texts describe.

The Sanskrit word Abhyanga combines 'abhi' (toward) and 'anga' (limb) — meaning the motion of oil flowing toward, around, and along every limb of the body. It is described in detail in the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam, codified over 2,000 years ago.

In classical Ayurveda, Abhyanga is not occasional therapy. It is daily self-care — what brushing teeth is to dental health. Most Ayurvedic physicians prescribe daily self-Abhyanga to their patients alongside the weekly clinical sessions performed in clinic.

What separates clinical Abhyanga at a DHA-licensed Ayurveda clinic in Dubai from self-Abhyanga at home is three things: the oils (medicated to your specific dosha imbalance), the technique (two trained therapists working in synchronized strokes with controlled pressure and direction), and the setting (a warmed wooden droni table designed for the therapy, in a heated private room).

"Abhyanga is the closest thing classical medicine has to a daily multivitamin — except it works through the skin, not the stomach."

THE TREATMENT PROTOCOL

Ninety minutes, seven phases, two therapists.

A clinical Abhyanga at Vedara Care follows the classical sequence described in Ayurvedic texts. Each phase has a specific purpose.

0-5 MIN

Phase 1 — Consultation & Dosha Reassessment

Your assigned therapist begins with a brief check-in — confirming your current dosha state, any musculoskeletal sensitivities, and reviewing your prescription. The oils are warmed to body temperature in a brass bowl. You change into a cotton wrap, and the heated wooden droni table is prepared.

5-15 MIN

Phase 2 — Murdha Taila - Head & Crown

The session begins with oil applied to the crown (the marma point known as Adhipati). Slow, circular strokes work outward to the temples, the back of the neck, and the upper shoulders. This phase calms the nervous system before the body work begins.

15-25 MIN

Phase 3 — Pada Abhyanga — Feet

Both therapists work simultaneously on each foot — applying warm oil and using deep, deliberate strokes from the soles upward to the calves. In classical Ayurveda, foot massage is considered second only to head massage in importance. This is the phase patients remember most.

25-55 MIN

Phase 4 — Sapta Anga — Back & Spine

You turn onto your front. Both therapists work in synchronized parallel strokes from the shoulders along the length of the spine to the lower back and gluteals. Specific direction of strokes follows lymphatic and energetic pathways described in classical texts.

50-70 MIN

Phase 5 — Sapta Anga — Front

You turn onto your back. Synchronized strokes move along the chest, abdomen (gentle circular motions clockwise, following digestive direction), arms, and front of legs. Abdominal work is always lighter, always clockwise, always slow.

70-80 MIN

Phase 6 — Marma Stimulation

The therapists work on specific marma points — the 107 vital energy points described in Ayurvedic and martial arts traditions. Particular focus on stress-relief marma at the temples, sternum, and palms. This phase is what makes Abhyanga therapeutic rather than recreational.

80-90 MIN

Phase 7 — Stillness & Recovery

The final 10 minutes are stillness. You remain on the droni with oil on the body — no further manipulation. This rest period is non-negotiable. The oil and the work need time to absorb. Premature movement undoes the therapy.

Followed by Swedana (medicated steam therapy) on most days, included in your session price. Showering happens after Swedana, not directly after Abhyanga.

DOSHA-SPECIFIC OILS

Three patients. Three different oils. That is the whole point.

Vata

COLD, DRY, IRREGULAR

Patients with predominant Vata imbalance — anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, joint cracking, irregular digestion — receive heavy, warming, deeply penetrating oils. Sesame oil is the foundation, medicated with classical preparations like Mahanarayana taila or Dhanvantaram taila. Pressure is slower, longer, deeper. The objective is grounding.

Typically prescribed for:

AnxietyInsomniaJoint stiffness

Pitta

HOT, SHARP, INTENSE

Pitta-imbalanced patients — irritability, heat sensitivity, inflammatory conditions, certain skin issues — receive cooling oils. Coconut oil or specifically processed sunflower oil base, medicated with cooling herbs like Chandanadi or Pinda taila. Pressure is moderate. The objective is cooling and softening.

Typically prescribed for:

Skin conditionsHeadachesInflammation

Kapha

HEAVY, SLOW, CONGESTED

Kapha-dominant patients — sluggishness, weight retention, congestion, lymphatic stagnation — receive lighter, warmer, more stimulating oils. Mustard oil base or specialised preparations like Murchita taila. Strokes are faster, more vigorous. The objective is mobilisation, not relaxation.

Typically prescribed for:

Weight managementLymphatic stagnationCongestion

Most patients are not a single dosha. Your doctor assesses your specific Vata-Pitta-Kapha pattern and prescribes a blend or sequence. The oils used at Vedara Care are sourced from classical Ayurvedic pharmacies in Kerala with documented quality testing.

ABHYANGA QUESTIONS

What patients ask before their first Abhyanga.

Ask the Team

Abhyanga is the classical full-body Ayurvedic oil massage from India, described in medical texts over 2,000 years old. It involves applying warm dosha-specific medicated oils across the entire body in synchronized strokes by two trained therapists, typically over 60 to 90 minutes. It is performed on a wooden table called a droni and followed by a brief steam therapy (Swedana).

A complete classical Abhyanga at Vedara Care runs 90 minutes — including the oil application phases (head to feet), marma point work, and final stillness phase. Adding the Swedana steam therapy that follows brings total clinic time to about 110 minutes. Shorter 60-minute Abhyanga sessions are available but reduce the marma and stillness phases.

Classical Abhyanga is performed by two synchronized therapists working in parallel — one on each side of the body for limbs, both following identical stroke patterns. This synchrony is described in classical texts and matters for two reasons: it doubles the lymphatic and energetic effect, and it cuts treatment time in half. Single-therapist Abhyanga exists but is technically called Ekanga Abhyanga and produces a different effect.

At Vedara Care, single-session Abhyanga starts from AED 450 for 90 minutes including Swedana. Seven-session courses start from AED 2,800 (10–15% per-session discount). Fourteen-session courses start from AED 4,900 (15–20% per-session discount). Home Abhyanga is slightly higher to cover travel. Across Dubai, authentic two-therapist Abhyanga typically ranges from AED 400 to AED 900 per session.

For general wellbeing, relaxation, or first-time Ayurveda, one to three sessions is enough. For dosha rebalancing or chronic stress, 7 sessions over 3–4 weeks is the standard protocol. For specific conditions like chronic insomnia or back pain alongside internal medicines, 14 sessions over 6–10 weeks is typical. Your doctor will recommend the right course at consultation.

Most patients feel a distinct shift after a single session — deeper sleep that night, slower mental tempo, slight muscle soreness on Day 2 (similar to gentle exercise), and a softer skin feel for several days. Therapeutic effects (sleep quality, anxiety reduction, joint stiffness improvement) typically require a course, not a session.

Bring nothing. We provide everything. You will undress fully and wear a disposable cotton wrap during the session. Female patients are always treated by female therapists, male patients by male therapists. The treatment room is private and warmed. After the session, you shower at the clinic using our facilities — do not arrive in clothes you want to wear afterwards (oil stains).

Yes, but slowly. Most patients feel deeply relaxed and slightly slowed for 1–2 hours after. We recommend not scheduling anything mentally demanding for at least 3 hours post-session. Many patients book Abhyanga in late afternoon and go straight home for an early sleep.

Modified Abhyanga is safe and beneficial from the second trimester onwards, performed by a therapist specifically trained in prenatal protocols. Pressure is lighter, certain marma points are avoided, and the abdomen is not worked. Classical Abhyanga is not performed in the first trimester or in high-risk pregnancies. Always consult before booking when pregnant.

Classical Ayurveda recommends pausing Abhyanga during the heaviest menstrual days (typically days 1–3 of the cycle), and resuming after. The reasoning relates to the body's natural detoxification cycle. Light or specific Abhyanga protocols may be prescribed during difficult menstruation as part of a treatment plan — your doctor will guide you.

The oils used depend on your dosha and condition. Common bases are sesame oil (for Vata), coconut oil (for Pitta), and mustard oil (for Kapha). These are then medicated with classical preparations such as Mahanarayana taila, Dhanvantaram taila, Chandanadi taila, Pinda taila, or Murchita taila — depending on what your doctor prescribes. All our oils are sourced from classical Ayurvedic pharmacies in Kerala and Maharashtra with documented quality testing.
