BEYOND RELAXATION

Shirodhara works on the autonomic nervous system. Most patients describe the first 10 minutes as ordinary calm. The next 35 minutes are something else entirely.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Shirodhara in Dubai, in one paragraph.

Shirodhara (शिरोधారా) is the classical Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous stream of warm medicated oil is poured rhythmically across the forehead — specifically targeting the Ajna marma point above and between the eyebrows — for 30 to 60 minutes. At Vedara Care Polyclinic in Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai, Shirodhara is doctor-prescribed by BAMS-qualified physicians for chronic insomnia, anxiety, migraine, ADHD support, and stress-related disorders. Sessions start from AED 450 and are often most powerful when delivered as a 7 to 14-session course.

THE STILLNESS THERAPY

A therapy described in texts older than most modern medicine — and still doing what those texts said it would.

The Sanskrit word Shirodhara combines "shiro" (head) and "dhara" (continuous flow). It is described in the Ashtanga Hridayam and Bhavaprakasha — classical Ayurvedic texts written over 1,500 years ago — as a therapy for what those texts call "manovikara": disorders of the mind, mood, and consciousness.

In modern clinical terms, Shirodhara appears to act on the autonomic nervous system, the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, and the trigeminal nerve pathways through the forehead. Research published in journals including the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine has documented measurable changes in heart rate variability, cortisol levels, and EEG patterns during and after Shirodhara sessions.

What Shirodhara is not is a "relaxing oil drip" or a spa add-on. It is a precise classical therapy with specific oil temperatures, flow rates, vessel heights, and stream points — all of which matter. Done casually, you receive a warm head shower. Done properly, you receive a therapy.

"Most patients say nothing happens for the first ten minutes. Then everything happens."

THE TREATMENT PROTOCOL

Forty-five minutes. Three phases. One continuous stream.

A classical Shirodhara at Vedara Care follows the sequence described in the original texts. The variables that matter are temperature, flow rate, oil selection, and the height of the vessel.

0-15

Phase 1 — Preparation & Brief Abhyanga

You change into a cotton wrap and lie on a heated wooden droni. The therapist begins with a brief 10-minute head, neck, and shoulder Abhyanga using a small amount of the same medicated oil that will be used for the dhara. This warm-up serves two purposes: it relaxes the cervical and trapezius musculature so the head can rest fully still during the dhara, and it brings the body into a parasympathetic state before the main therapy begins. The copper dhara vessel is suspended above the forehead at the precise height described in classical texts (about four finger-widths above the third eye).

15-50

Phase 2 — The Dhara

The continuous stream begins. Oil — warmed to body temperature, never hot — flows from the copper vessel in a steady stream that the therapist controls with their hand, moving the stream rhythmically left-to-right across the forehead in a slow figure-eight pattern. Your eyes are gently covered with a soft cotton band. The stream never stops, never thickens, never thins. The flow rate is approximately 4 to 6 litres of oil over the 35-minute dhara, recirculated continuously from the reservoir beneath your head. Most patients describe entering an altered state of consciousness somewhere in the first 15 minutes — not sleep, not waking, but something between.

50-60

Phase 3 — Stillness & Recovery

The dhara stops. The vessel is removed. The therapist gently wipes excess oil from the forehead but leaves a film on the scalp and hair. You remain on the droni in stillness for at least 10 minutes — the recovery phase is non-negotiable. Premature movement undoes the parasympathetic state the therapy creates. After the rest period, you sit slowly, drink warm water, and move to the shower. We recommend leaving the oil in your hair for the rest of the day if possible — washing happens that evening or the next morning.

Total clinic time approximately 75 minutes including changing, brief consultation, and post-session rest. Plan a quiet afternoon afterward — most patients describe altered focus and slower thinking for several hours.

DOSHA-SPECIFIC OILS

Five different oils for five different patients.

The oil used in Shirodhara is selected for your specific condition and dosha imbalance. The same therapy with the wrong oil produces only modest results.

Brahmi Taila

Cognitive and nerve support

A sesame oil base medicated with Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), one of Ayurveda's most researched nervine herbs. Used for chronic anxiety, ADHD support, cognitive overload, and stress affecting concentration. Recent research has documented Brahmi's effects on memory and stress hormone regulation.

Typically prescribed for:

anxietyADHD supportcognitive overload

Ksheerabala Taila

Vata pacification for severe insomnia

A specialised oil prepared with Bala (Sida cordifolia) and milk, used for severe insomnia, restless sleep, chronic tension headaches, and Vata-pattern nervous system depletion. Often the first choice for executive burnout and chronic stress.

Typically prescribed for:

insomniachronic stresstension headache

Chandanadi Taila

Cooling for Pitta-pattern conditions

A cooling sandalwood-based preparation used for migraine, heat-pattern insomnia, irritability, and stress-related skin conditions. Patients with Pitta imbalance — typically high-achievers with hot, sharp, intense stress patterns — respond particularly well to this oil.

Typically prescribed for:

migraineirritabilityPitta-pattern stress

Mahanarayana Taila

Heavy Vata pacification

A heavier, deeply warming sesame oil preparation used for severe Vata disorders affecting the nervous system — chronic insomnia in elderly patients, post-illness mental fatigue, and certain neurological recovery protocols.

Typically prescribed for:

Buttermilk (Takradhara)

A variant — fermented buttermilk instead of oil

A specific Shirodhara variant in which medicated fermented buttermilk replaces oil. Used for specific Pitta-Vata combination conditions including chronic migraine, psoriasis, certain hair loss patterns, and chronic insomnia where oil-based Shirodhara is contraindicated.

Typically prescribed for:

chronic migrainehair losscertain skin conditions

Your doctor will select the right oil after consultation. The oils used at Vedara Care are sourced from classical Ayurvedic pharmacies in Kerala with documented quality testing. Substitution between oils mid-course is sometimes done based on clinical progress.

Hair loss (Khalitya)

Typical protocol: 14-21 sessions with Takradhara variant

COMPLEMENTARY USE

Shirodhara is often a powerful adjunct therapy. These conditions need a broader treatment plan, with Shirodhara as one component.

Depression (alongside psychiatric care)

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Pre-menstrual mood symptoms

SHIRODHARA QUESTIONS

What patients ask before their first Shirodhara.

For comparison with other Ayurvedic therapies, see our category guide. For Abhyanga (often combined with Shirodhara), see the Abhyanga page.

Ask the Team

Shirodhara is the classical Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous stream of warm medicated oil is poured rhythmically across the forehead for 30 to 60 minutes. The therapy is performed while you lie on a wooden table, with the oil flowing from a copper vessel suspended above your head. It is one of the most clinically researched Ayurvedic therapies and is used for stress, insomnia, anxiety, migraine, and related nervous-system conditions.

Most patients describe Shirodhara in three stages. The first 5-10 minutes feels like ordinary calm — pleasant but unremarkable. Between 10 and 25 minutes, most patients enter what they describe as an altered state — not sleep, not waking, but a slowed consciousness similar to deep meditation. The final phase, both during and after, is what patients describe as the therapeutic effect — typically reported as clarity, emotional release, and a quality of stillness that persists for hours.

Total clinic time is approximately 75 minutes — including a brief preparatory head and neck Abhyanga (15 minutes), the main Shirodhara dhara (35 minutes), and the mandatory rest period afterward (10-15 minutes). Followed by shower time at the clinic. Plan a quiet afternoon afterward — most patients are not at their sharpest mentally for several hours.

At Vedara Care, single-session Shirodhara starts from AED 450 for 75 minutes total clinic time. Seven-session courses start from AED 2,800 (10-15% per-session discount). Fourteen-session therapeutic courses start from AED 5,200 (15-20% per-session discount). Across Dubai, authentic Shirodhara typically ranges from AED 350 to AED 800 per session, depending on duration, oil quality, and clinic standards.

For chronic conditions like insomnia or anxiety, expect 7 to 14 sessions over 3 to 6 weeks. For severe migraine or chronic stress, 14 to 21 sessions over 6 to 10 weeks. For mild stress or one-off therapy, 1 to 3 sessions can be meaningful. The key variable is session frequency — typically 2 to 3 days apart, not consecutive days.

The oil is selected for your specific dosha and condition. Common options at Vedara Care include Brahmi Taila (for anxiety and cognitive overload), Ksheerabala Taila (for insomnia and tension), Chandanadi Taila (cooling, for migraine and Pitta-pattern stress), Mahanarayana Taila (for heavy Vata disorders), and Takradhara (a buttermilk-based variant for specific Pitta-Vata conditions). Your doctor will explain the selection at consultation.

Modified Shirodhara is generally safe and beneficial from the second trimester onwards, performed by a therapist trained in prenatal protocols, with lighter oils and gentler positioning. Classical Shirodhara is not performed in the first trimester. Postnatal Shirodhara is one of our most-requested services for new mothers — particularly for postnatal mood disorders and insomnia.

Yes, but plan for slowness. Most patients feel mentally slower for 2 to 4 hours after Shirodhara — focus is softer, reaction times slightly slower. We recommend not scheduling demanding work, important conversations, or driving long distances immediately after. Many patients book Shirodhara in late afternoon and go straight home for an early sleep.
